“Make the room warmer” or “remove damp” describes a customer's problem, but it is not yet a product specification. Before ordering home repair goods, distinguish a draught around an opening from water ingress or persistent indoor moisture. The same product will not resolve every cause.
For a small shop, a focused assortment with clear fitting information can be more useful to test than a large selection of vaguely described universal accessories.
Specify seals by the gap and profile
Ask for photographs, existing profile dimensions, the measured gap and the surface to which the seal will attach. Record material, profile shape, colour and required length per pack. Agree how the supplier identifies each variant.
Check whether a quoted length refers to one strip or the combined length after splitting a double strip. Include a diagram on the product information sheet. Test the chosen sample on the intended opening: an oversized seal can interfere with closing. Do not substitute a thicker profile merely because it looks more substantial.
Define the moisture-control task
A customer trying to dry laundry in a bathroom has different expectations from someone managing a cool basement. Record room conditions, operating temperature, approximate humidity, noise constraints, drain access and available power.
Ask the supplier to state the conditions used for a dehumidification claim. A number of litres per day without those conditions is difficult to compare. A small low-power unit and a compressor unit should not be presented as interchangeable just because both collect water. Persistent leaks or building defects need assessment beyond selecting a portable appliance.
Write the sample brief
- Confirm profile dimensions, packing length and labelling for each seal variant.
- Check fitting and closure on the agreed reference, where available.
- Specify the substrate and conditions for any adhesive test.
- For a dehumidifier, agree the setting, operating conditions, measurement period and drain arrangement.
- Separate appearance and packaging checks from performance tests requiring suitable equipment.
These are proposed acceptance points. Confirm which checks the supplier or an independent provider can perform before including them in the purchase agreement.
Account for packaging and repeat orders
Ask for packed dimensions, weight, protection against deformation and replacement accessories. Bulky appliances need their own delivery cost assessment. Record the approved sample and variant codes so a repeat order does not silently change dimensions or components.
Evidence behind the checklist
Seal reviews include both satisfactory use and confusion over fitting or effective length. They mix variants and older feedback, so they are not evidence of a current defect rate. Dehumidifier reviews show differing expectations around moisture collection and noise. These reports prompted the questions above; PromUA Source has not independently tested those products.
